Bates saddles three leather types

When it comes to equestrian equipment, Bates Saddles is a well-known and respected brand that offers a range of high-quality saddles. One of the key factors that sets Bates Saddles apart is the variety of leather types they offer. Understanding the different leather types and knowing how to care for them is essential for maintaining the longevity and quality of your saddle.

Many of Bates saddles come with the option of all three different leather types that are available form Bates. These leather types are Heritage, Opulence and Luxe. In this article we will look at the differences between these leather types and which models they are available on.

Heritage Leather

Heritage is the entry level leather found in Bates saddles. Made from the finest European leather.

Heritage leather is a smooth leather offering a waxy feel. The high oil and wax content of this performance leather ensures optimum suppleness and enhanced rider grip.

It is heavily pre-oiled and with it being natural leather it shows visible shade variations, it shows a traditional, if not distressed look. Saddles available with Heritage Leather combine the comfort and luxury of Opulence Leather on the seat and on the knee inserts, with the Heritage leather found on the skirt and the saddle flaps

All of Bates All Purpose saddles, are available in Heritage leather as well a some Jump and Dressage models.

Opulence Leather

Opulence leather also known as 'plus' leather is a option for all Bates All Purpose models and is found in many of the Jump and Dressage models such as the Innova Dressage and Elevation Jump.

Opulence leather is a soft milled, full grain leather. It gives you that pre-broken in feel as it is an ultra soft leather so you have immediate comfort in the saddle.

With it being a super soft leather the Opulence saddles feature a wear patch on the bottom of the flaps to help prevent wear.

Luxe Leather

Last and not least we come to Luxe Leather. Luxe leather needs no introduction and is Bates premium leather.

Luxe leather is hand-selected luxury calfskin leather. Which as Heritage and Opulence is available in all All Purpose models. However there are some models that come with Luxe leather as standard. Such as the Artiste, Isabell Icon, Advanta and Victrix.

Luxe leather is meticulously cared for throughout its journey onto your saddle, this guarentees the exceptional performance in strength, level of grip and that ultra-soft feel we know and love on Bates Luxe saddles.

Your Bates Luxe saddle will feel exceptionally grippy and luxurious from day one. Due to the natural properties of calfskin leather your Luxe leather saddle may require more care using the Bates Leather Care Kit products to prevent moisture loss, fading and to keep the leather protected especially in high wear areas as well as from sun exposure.

As with the Opulence leather Luxe leather saddles also come with wear patches on the bottom of the flap to help prevent wear.

Caring for Your Bates Saddle Leather

Proper care and maintenance are crucial for preserving the quality and longevity of your Bates saddle, regardless of the leather type. We would always advise using the Bates Leather Care Kit on all Bates leather products, whether that is your Heritage Jump saddle, Opulence AP saddle, or Luxe Stirrup Leathers.

Here are some general tips for caring for your saddle:

  1. Cleaning: Regularly clean your saddle with a damp cloth to remove dirt, sweat, and grime. Use a mild saddle soap or cleaner specifically designed for leather to gently clean the surface. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage the leather. We would recommend to use the Bates cleaner cream on your Bates saddle.

  2. Conditioning: Conditioning your saddle helps keep the leather supple and prevents it from drying out or cracking. Choose a high-quality leather conditioner and apply it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Conditioning should be done periodically, especially if the saddle is exposed to harsh weather conditions or frequent use. Bates provide a leather balsam which helps feed and condition the leather and keep it in fantastic condition.

  3. Storage: Proper storage is essential for maintaining the integrity of your saddle. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Use a saddle cover to protect it from dust and debris when not in use. A good quality, waterproof saddle cover with strong elastic and fleece lining to offer some protection is recommended.

  4. Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect your saddle for any signs of wear, loose stitching, or damage. Address any issues promptly with your saddler to prevent them from worsening.

By following these care tips, you can ensure that your Bates saddle remains in top condition for years to come.
