What is a Grackle Bridle?
A grackle bridle has the majority of the same features as any other bridle such as a cavesson or a flash bridle. The biggest difference is the noseband! The grackle noseband is what gives the grackle bridle it's name. Although it can also be referred to as a crossed or figure of eight noseband.
A Grackle is where the noseband consists of a continuous strap which crosses over the horses nose. It is easily recognisable, with the upper piece crossing between the infraorbital foreman and facial crest. This creates a figure of 8 shape. Grackle nosebands usually feature sheepskin padding in the centre and buckles under the chin and curb groove.
Previously grackle nosebands have only predominately been seen in disciplines such as eventing, showjumping or hunting. Grackle Bridles are now regularly seen within dressage boards since they gained FEI approval of them in 2016 for use in Dressage Competitions.
What is a grackle noseband used for?
The grackle was originally designed to reduce the horses ability to evade the bit by crossing its jaw both higher up towards the joint and lower down towards their muzzle.
Like a flash or a drop noseband the lower strap can also aid in keeping the bit stiller in your horses mouth.
Grackles are often popular due to the belief that the figure of eight design reduces interference and potential restriction of your horses airways with it being higher up away from their nostrils.
