Quick Links
GP saddles are designed to allow riders to slightly shorten their stirrup leathers to jump small jumps or to lengthen their stirrups to school the horse on the flat. They are traditionally semi-deep-seated, often with round cantles.
Pony GP saddles are ideal for those who are novices or prefer to do a bit of everything. Some riders prefer discipline-specific saddles as they begin to jump larger or to compete at dressage. However, a general-purpose saddle is a great all-rounder saddle for everyday use. GP saddles are all dual flap, offering fixed or moveable knee blocks. Some GP saddles also offer various girthing options, such as point and balance straps, which enable the saddle to be fitted to the horse correctly. With ponies, the balance strap is often required to help stabilise the saddle on a pony where saddles often slip to one side or both.
You should also consider your horse's back profile when looking for a pony GP saddle. Ponies are tricky to navigate and buy for as the come in so many different shapes and sizes. If your pony is very sporty, they may have a higher wither and narrower profile than some of their rounder, broader friends. Of course, these two ponies will need different saddles. If you have a broad, wide pony, you will be looking for a saddle with slimmer panels, a wider channel for a broader spine and, ideally, a tree suited to rounder shapes. Popular pony GP saddles include the Monarch Pony GP, Arena Pony GP, Bates Pony AP, Wintec Pony AP, Kent and Masters MPO and MLL, Thorowgood MPO and Whitaker Barnsley. Often, we see ponies ridden in saddles that are much too large for them. Ponies have short backs and commonly need saddles much smaller than their owners think. As a rough guide, we would say 13.2-14.2hhh = 16-16.5 inches, 13-13.2hh = 15-16 inches, 12-12.2hh =14 inches. This is only a rough guide, as each pony is different. You do need to verify this with your saddle fitter, who will be able to measure your pony accurately for you. One thing parents commonly ask us is if a pony can be fitted with a slightly larger saddle to accommodate a growing child. The answer is no. If your child outgrows the saddle, which is the correct size for the pony, it's time to get a bigger pony.
